Pushkar

The old Rangji temple at Pushkar, Rajasthan.

The temple, which is way more beautiful than its newer avatar outside the main market, is placed in a beautiful complex populated by little temples and some houses belonging to artists and craftspeople. Most houses are single story. There are two, double story houses too, one of them running a Yoga school. The other houses a dancer from Orissa, who teaches Indian classical dance to women tourists, mostly. The temple has a thick hedge of Holy Basil running around it, investing the air around the temple with an enchanting, sacred aroma all the time. The entire hedge is covered with colourful Muslin scarves to shelter the plants from cold.
