This is a traditional village from the Joseon dynasty, located at Andong in Gyeongsangbuk-Do. The 16th century village, built according to traditional Korean architecture Pungsu (or Feng Shui), resembles a Lotus flower. It is surrounded by beautiful hills and has picturesque views of a lake, sandy beaches and lush greenery. Hahoe, which means enveloped by water, is home to descendants of the Ryu clan of Pungsan and is widely known for its traditional houses. It is also the birthplace of renowned scholars of the Joseon Period including Gyeomam Ryu Un-ryong and Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong.

The village is situated on the foothills of Hwasan mountain, an extension of the Taebaek mountain which extends further towards the East. The Nakdong river runs around the village’s perimeter.

Besides the views, the village offers delectable local cuisine, including Heotjesabap, a Bibimbap (sea-weed) said to be a favourite among nobles; Andong Gangodeungeo (salted mackerel), and Andong Guksu, a noodle dish.

And if that’s not enough for you, well, Andong the city is famous for brewing Korea’s best and most ancient form of Soju. And Hahoe has some really good varieties of the Andong Soju.
